Best-Tasting Coffee Tips

  • All coffees are made from either arabica beans robusta beans, or some combination of both. Arabica beans are slightly more expensive but tend to produce better-tasting coffee.
  • Ground coffee will become stale much faster than whole beans. If buying preground coffee, choose a package with the latest expiration date or purchase a smaller quantity.
  • If grinding whole beans, set your coffee grinder on a fine/medium grind. This will yield the best-tasting grounds. Try to use freshly ground coffee within about a week of grinding.
  • Using a water filter, filtered water, or bottled water will yield better-tasting coffee than tap water.
  • Use approximately 1 tablespoon (5 g) of grounds for each cup of coffee being made. To avoid overflow, use slightly less grounds (3/4 tablespoon [4 g]) when brewing decaf or flavored coffees. Also, be aware that using coffee that is ground too finely may also cause the Filter Basket to overflow.
  • Make sure your coffee maker is clean. See “the Care and Cleaning” section.

Care and Cleaning

  1. Remove optional Water Filter, if using.
  2. Pour 1 pint (2 cups [473 mL]) white vinegar into Water Reservoir.
  3. Press the Power (ON [I]/OFF [ ]) button to begin the brew cycle. Press the button again after 30 seconds and wait 30 minutes. Press the button again, then press once more when finished.
  4. Run 2–3 more brew cycles with clean water only. Allow to cool between cycles.
  5. Hand wash all removable parts in hot, soapy water; rinse and dry, or wash in the TOP RACK only of the dishwasher. DO NOT use the “SANITIZE” setting when washing in the dishwasher. “SANITIZE” cycle temperatures could damage your product.
  6. Unplug. Wipe the outside of the Coffee Maker with a damp cloth and dry it. Do not use abrasive cleansers or sponges, which will damage the Coffee Maker finish.

Filter Basket overflows or coffee brews slowly

  • Bold and Robust settings allow for slower brewing to optimize a bold coffee flavor.
  • Excessive amounts of ground coffee. Reduce the amount of ground coffee, or select a Bold or Robust setting for slower brewing.
  • Decaffeinated and/or coffee grounds too finely can cause overflow. Use slightly less ground when brewing decaffeinated, flavored, or finely ground coffee. Or, use medium ground coffee.
  • The Coffee Maker needs cleaning.
  • The Pause ‘N Serve function was used. Return the Carafe to Keep the Warm Plate within 20 seconds and make sure the Carafe is in place to return to brewing

Coffee grounds between the paper filter and Filter Basket

  • The paper filter is not open and in the proper position. Before adding grounds, check the placement of the filter. Fold the bottom of the cone filter under to ensure the filter comes to the top of the Removable Filter Basket, or rinse the Filter Basket before inserting the paper filter so the paper will remain pressed against the IDs of the basket.
  • Poor quality paper filter.

Coffee tastes bad

  • The Coffee Maker needs cleaning.
  • Coffee ground too coarsely or too finely. Use medium-ground coffee.
  • Coffee-to-water ratio unbalanced. Adjust for personal preference.
  • Poor coffee quality and freshness.
  • Poor water quality. Use filtered or bottled water.
